What is the Naturalization Process?

Naturalization is the legal process by which a non-U.S. citizen can become an American citizen. To qualify, there are a few key requirements you must meet, including:

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Permanent Residency: You need to have held a Green Card for at least 5 years, or 3 years if you're married to a U.S. citizen.
  • Continuous Residence: You should have lived in the U.S. without long absences during the required period.
  • Good Moral Character: You must show that you have good moral character, with no serious criminal history.
  • English Proficiency: You need to be able to read, write, and speak basic English.
  • Civics Knowledge: Understanding U.S. history and government is also part of the process.

The Steps of the Naturalization Process

The naturalization journey typically follows these key steps:

  • Application Submission: You’ll start by filing Form N-400, the Application for Naturalization, with USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services).
  • Biometrics Appointment: You’ll attend an appointment for fingerprinting and background checks.
  • Interview and Examination: You’ll meet with a USCIS officer for an interview, which will include an English language and civics test.
  • Oath of Allegiance: Once approved, you’ll take the Oath of Allegiance and officially become a U.S. citizen.
